Aurora photographer Kevin Steele was recently awarded 'Best in Show' in the 2013 American Photographic Artists annual photo competition.
The APA is the most prestigious national organization for professional photographers, and this photograph by Kevin Steele was taken just weeks ago at the Santa Barbara Triathlon, one of the longest running triathlons in the US.
Steele says of his experience: "As I've done for three years now, in late August I photographed the Santa Barbara Triathlon...The race director, aware that I'm also pretty athletic, allows me complete access to get extremely close with the athletes." It didn't take long for Steele to capture this image: it happened at 7:30AM as the elite triathletes charged into the ocean, within the first dozen frames that Steele shot. Steele recalled that "ten seconds later I was still with them, swimming shoulder deep with my camera."
Steele says: "It was a great surprise and a wonderful honor to be selected among photographers I admire and respect. The SB Triathlon has resulted in a body of athletic and emotional work that I'm proud of - I just let intuition get in the drivers seat and wrap myself in the moment. The goal after all is to create inspiring images."
