Michael Hanson wins American Photo award
Aurora photographer Michael Hanson was honored with a 2009 Images of the Year award for his portraiture work of Ethiopian tribesmen in the December edition of American Photo. Set in the Omo Valley in southeastern Ethiopia, Michael found that tourist photography, coupled with the influx if Western cultures, is quickly changing the way traditional native populations interact with the camera. “This necessitated a different approach to my documentary style…I appreciate being recognized for a series that was difficult to shoot and is a departure from my normal style.” The award is one of six divisions for the best images of the year 2009.
