Tintype images by Aurora photographer Robb Kendrick were featured in the Spectrum section of the January 11, 2009 edition of the Sunday Times Magazine in London. These portraits of contemporary working cowboys from Texas and Nevada were done using the traditional tintype method to help give the images a 19th-century “frontierland” feel.

In shooting these cowboys, Robb found it interesting how little their methods of work had changed in the last century, even in a such a modernized culture. “I admire the work ethic and love these people have for their lifestyle and the value they place on living a life that is personally satisfying as opposed to merely monetarily,” says Robb.

Aurora Select photographer Katja Heinemann spent a few days this fall exploring Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland for the 2008 Winter issue of Volkswagen Magazin to document local color, historic places and the brand new Passat CC.

Volkswagen recently moved their US headquarters from Detroit to suburban Washington and wanted to acquaint their German readers with the region through a travel essay. “I got to drive around the area for some 700 miles, location scouting and shooting simultaneously,” Katja said. “Photographing the car in a tobacco barn in MD, on a horse farm in VA, circling in front the capitol, or on a cobblestone street in Annapolis – and just about wherever else looked good to me or the assistant I was traveling with.”

José Azel, Aurora President and photographer, braved the infamous weather on New Hampshire’s Mount Washington to shoot for the February 2009 issue of National Geographic Magazine. The mountain, often cited as having the “worst weather in America”, had José on his back as he tried to steady himself against the wind long enough to capture images of a weather observer smashing frozen fog (rime) from equipment and an intern at the summit weather station walking bent by the 100-mile-an-hour gusts.

Aurora Select photographer Katja Heinemann’s photos were featured in the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law 2007 Annual Report. To document the Law Center’s work, Katja and art director Cliff Questel traveled all over Chicago to photograph local individuals and organizations that had received assistance from The Shriver Center to illustrate policy issues such as fair housing, child care, immigration, health care and economic security.

“The project evolved in a process that began with a fairly abstract concept of The Shriver Center’s policy priorities and through brainstorming and research resulted in a photo driven final publication that portrays individuals that are involved at the heart of these issues,” Katja said. “Photo shoots documented the SEED program teaching children how to save for college, The Grove Parc housing development’s resident leadership team, the Carole Robertson Center for Learning’s Child Care and Youth Initiatives, Access Community Health Network’s community health center, and the Jane Addams Senior Caucus initiative for affordable senior buildings.”

For the January/February 2009 issue of Saudi Aramco World, Aurora photographer David H. Wells documents the many young Indian workers who man “Business Process Outsource” Centers. These call centers manage the customer care needs of companies such as GE, American Express and British Airways and employ an ever-increasing number of recent college graduates. To read the article, please visit http://www.saudiaramcoworld.com/issue/200901/the.virtual.immigrant.htm.

David says of the shoot, “I tell my students often that there are a dozen (or more) different ways to tell the same story, photographically. No single one is “better” than the other, but each leaves the viewer with a different experience of the subject and of the author’s interpretation of that subject.”
