Aurora contributor Coke Whitworth’s portraits of Venus Flytraps appear in the March-April 2008 issue of Audubon magazine. “I followed a group of scientists that were locating and tagging Venus Flytraps in the Pocosin pine area of coastal North Carolina,” Whitworth explains. “The Venus Flytrap, which is native to the area, is experiencing a great many environmental ‘stresses’ these days with a shrinking habitat due to wetlands development, and constant poaching of the desirable plant.” He adds, “It was an amazing experience working on a macro level shooting plant portraits and getting to study the architecture of these ‘meat eating’ machines.”

Aurora contributor Eric Rorer’s photographs of environmental threats facing the Galapagos islands are featured in the March 2008 issue of Newsweek Japan. “I originally went on this assignment to document research by science historian Frank Sulloway, who has special permits to access parts of the islands where tourists are not allowed,” explains Rorer. “What I soon realized is that the travel restrictions on tourists, which are necessary for protecting the islands, are also working to camouflage the serious threats facing the archipelago. The truth is that damage to areas off limits to tourists is often much worse than in areas open to tourists. The tourist zones are quite small and relatively well maintained. Garbage is cleaned up, and invasive plants are removed. On the other hand, beaches in closed areas are frequently lined with trash dumped overboard by local fishermen and cruise ships. I’m hoping some of these images will shed light on what’s really going on.”

Aurora photographer Andrew Kornylak is featured in the April issue of Garden and Gun magazine. The article, Southern Crew, explores competitive rowing while, “profiling a head race in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.” Kornylak writes, “Though I was a competitive athlete in college, rowing was something I passed up in favor of individual sports. Shooting the head race in Oak Ridge confirmed my first impressions of it as particularly grueling sport, but I also learned what I had missed out on, like the meditative beauty of slicing through water at dawn, and of the amazing synchronized power of a strong eight.”
